Ascent to Mt. Kilimanjaro
Uhuru peak

Overview:
…Conquering the highest peak of Africa...

Mount Kilimanjaro is a stratus volcano in the mountains of northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. With its 4600m it makes the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and has the highest peak in Africa, Uhuru. With 5895m of height Uhuru offers dramatic views of the surrounding plains. Kilimanjaro National Park was founded in 1971. It is inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage in Africa to protect the many species of mammals that live in the Park, many of which are endangered species. After considerable trekking efforts we continue our journey into a new three-day adventure, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater . Serengeti National Park is a reserve in north-western Tanzania, which is the south continuation of the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya. It is known for its exceptional population of large cats and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson deer and wild beast. Ngorongoro Crater, also called ''the Cradle of Life'' is a home for 40,000 members of the Masai tribe. In this area the oldest remains of the first hominins were found. Both sites are inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in Africa.

Day 1
Flight from Zagreb, hotel accommodation upon arrival
This remarkable expedition begins flying from Zagreb to Arusha, direct airport of Kilimanjaro. Arriving in the early morning we will get transfer to Moshi and accommodated in the hotel and have the rest of the day free to get ready for our expedition. There are several different ascents to Kilimanjaro; we selected the most picturesque, yet physically most acceptable way. Our climb will take us through the "Machame" route through dense forest and wetland area from south to west, and joins the Shira route before we pass beneath the southern ice fields of Kiba. Rainforest is extremely beautiful and as we get higher reaching certain levels it gets to a real wilderness. The seven day trek gives maximum possible acclimatization and also gives us enough time to enjoy the beautiful scenery, simply unforgettable sights of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds.
Details:
Day 1 – Flight from Zagreb
Day 2 – Arrival, transfer to hotel and spending the day in town
Day 3
Drive to Machame gate. Begin trekking
The climb starts from Machame Gate (1,800m) after a short walk through the attractive banana and coffee farms of Machame village. The path follows a ridge through dense mountain forest. This is the richest forested area on the mountain and also the zone from where 96% of the water on Kilimanjaro originates. On sunny days and especially in dry season, this section is very lush and beautiful. We will have lunch at 'Halfway Clearing' a small opening in the trees and continue climbing steadily. The gradient becomes gentler as the forest slowly merges into giant heather close to the next camp near the ruins of Machame Hut (3,000m.). We may get our first closer look at the glaciated peak of Kibo if the evening clouds permit.
Details: 3-4 hours walking, elevation gain: 1200m
Day 4
Trekking expedition to Kilimanjaro
Shorter day that begins by climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semi-circular cliff known as Picnic Rock. There are excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau from here, and it is a good rest point too! The trail continues less steeply to reach the Shira Plateau. We camp near Shira Hut (3,840m.) which has some of the most spectacular views on Kilimanjaro. Close to the huge volcanic cone of Kibo, the spectacular rock formations of Shira Plateau and looking across to Mt. Meru floating on the clouds.
Details: 4-5 hours walking, elevation gain: 840m
Day 5
A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the Western breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4,600m.) which you can climb, we descend to the bottom of the Barranco valley (3,950m.) to the campsite, sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below.
Details: 6-7 hours walking, elevation gain: 760m
Day 6
Another tough morning ahead of us, steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south - eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Ice fields. The terrain slightly changes, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows. From here only a short distance to our next camp at Karanga (3,892m.), the last water point on the approach to Barafu, in a narrow valley. There is plenty of time to rest, or for a short optional acclimatization walk in the afternoon up the valley above the camp.
Details: 4-5 hours walking
Day 7
A short but steep climb out of Karanga and an easy path on compact soil with wide views. We then climb steadily to reach the Barafu campsite (4,600m.). The rest of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before an early night.
Details: 3 hours walking, elevation gain: 710m
Day 8
If there was ever a morning to get up early this is the one. We will start our ascent by torch-light at about 1 am so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic soil has some well-graded switchbacks and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5,735m.), in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m.), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast and after some refreshment we continue to descend to reach our final campsite (3,100m.) at the edge of Mweka Forest.
Details: 11-15 hours walking, elevation gain: up 1295m – down 2795m
Day 9
A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to the National Park gate at Mweka (1,650m.); and on through coffee and banana plantations to Mweka village. We will then meet our driver and get transfer back to our hotel in Arusha.
Details: 3-4 hours walking, elevation gain: 1450m
